The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has stated that it cannot influence the immigration decisions of the United States after Somalian referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan was denied entry into the country.

The football governing body noted that US authorities had briefed them about the denial of Artan’s visa to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA explained that it has no power to compel authorities to grant the 2025 African Best Referee a visa to perform his duties.

“FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Artan’s status will not be changed at present.

“In line with previous FIFA events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country,” FIFA said in a statement released to the public.

Artan, who had previously overcome visa complications after a wave of online support helped secure his approval, finally made the journey to the United States.

According to reports, he traveled from Kenya, transited through Turkey, and eventually landed in the US with hopes of joining other elite officials preparing for FIFA duties.

But upon arrival, the situation took a dramatic turn. Immigration authorities denied him entry, sending him back to Turkey without a clear explanation.

This adds to the controversies that have marred the World Cup, as some critics argue that the US should not have been awarded hosting rights due to insecurity and immigration concerns in the country.
