For many footballers, a single World Cup goal is enough to secure a place in history. For Asamoah Gyan, history became a habit.
Across three World Cups, the former Black Stars captain turned football’s biggest stage into his personal theatre.
He scored crucial goals, broke records and carried the hopes of an entire nation on his shoulders.
By the time he left the World Cup stage, Gyan had not only cemented his status as a Ghanaian legend but had also achieved feats no African player had managed before him.
These are the five records that define the man many regard as Africa’s World Cup king.

First Ghana player to score at a World Cup
Ghana’s long-awaited World Cup debut arrived in Germany in 2006. The Black Stars had dominated African football for decades but had never managed to qualify for the global showpiece.
That changed in Germany, and so did the nation’s World Cup history.
In Ghana’s second group game against the Czech Republic, Gyan raced through on goal after just over a minute and calmly slotted the ball into the net.
It was a historic moment. Not only had Ghana scored its first-ever World Cup goal, but it had come from a striker who would go on to become the face of the country’s greatest World Cup era.
Most World Cup goals by an African player (Six)
African football has produced legendary World Cup performers, from Roger Milla to Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba.
Yet none of them scored more goals at the tournament than Gyan.
His six-goal haul came across three editions of the competition. He scored once in Germany, three times in South Africa and twice in Brazil.
The tally moved him ahead of Cameroon’s Roger Milla and established him as Africa’s most prolific scorer in World Cup history.
For years, whenever the World Cup arrived, Gyan could be relied upon to find the net.
Scored at every World Cup he played in
Consistency is what separates good players from great ones.
Gyan featured at three World Cups, 2006, 2010 and 2014 and scored in all three.
He announced himself in Germany, became Ghana’s hero during the unforgettable run to the quarter-finals in South Africa, and returned four years later to score against both Germany and Portugal in Brazil.
Very few players maintain that level of impact across multiple tournaments. Gyan did it every single time he stepped onto the World Cup stage.
Ghana’s fastest World Cup Goal
The clock showed just 68 seconds.
Before many fans had even settled into their seats, Gyan had already made history.
His strike against the Czech Republic in 2006 remains the fastest World Cup goal ever scored by a Ghanaian player.
It stunned one of Europe’s strongest teams and set Ghana on course for a famous 2-0 victory.
Nearly two decades later, no Ghanaian has managed to break that record.
Most World Cup appearances for Ghana (11)
Goals may grab headlines, but longevity tells its own story.
From Germany in 2006 to Brazil in 2014, Gyan remained a constant presence for the Black Stars on the biggest stage.
He accumulated 11 World Cup appearances, more than any other Ghanaian player.
The record reflects more than just talent.
For nearly a decade, whenever Ghana walked onto a World Cup pitch, Gyan was almost always there.
And that is why his legacy remains unmatched.
