An Algerian supporter with French nationality has been placed in detention at Oudaya Prison following a controversial incident during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 tournament in Morocco.
The individual, identified as MR, was filmed tearing up Moroccan banknotes at the Marrakech stadium, an act that quickly went viral on social media and sparked outrage among local fans.
Authorities have charged MR with incitement to hatred during sporting events, as well as defamation and public insults.
These allegations arise from statements and shouts made by the supporter that were considered contrary to good morals and public decency, targeting a specific group of people.

The incident also reflected the long-standing tensions between Algeria and Morocco, which often spill into football.
The rivalry was especially visible during the tournament’s quarter-finals, when Moroccan fans were seen joining Nigerian supporters to celebrate Algeria’s elimination, a moment that further fueled animosity among some Algerian fans.
According to Le360, Moroccan authorities acted swiftly to prevent the incident from escalating tensions during the tournament, emphasizing the importance of maintaining respect and decorum at major sporting events.
The arrest highlights Morocco’s zero-tolerance approach to actions or statements that could incite hatred or undermine public order, especially during the AFCON.
