Accra, Oct 23, GNA - Ghana's Black Princess on Sunday ensured the country's dominance over South Africa remained unblemished by posting a 2-1 victory over Basetsana in an international friendly match played at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra.
With a goal in each half, the national U-20 team fared better than they did in the first duel on Friday where they had to rely on a late equalizer by Diana Amankwah to draw one all.
Riding heavily on the cheers of the National Women's Supporters Union, the Princess gave lovers of the game enough reason to expect miracles from them as they exhibited little team building effort. On a day that telepathic understanding proved decisive for the young ladies, Anita Amenuku drew applause from the crowd with a talented display that saw her outpacing her markers with the ball glued to the head before releasing a volley that was however cleverly saved by goalkeeper De Araujo Mandy in the eighth minute.
The Basetsane's quickly retaliated as they launched an invasion which left skipper Olivia Amoako and goalkeeper Gladys' Quansah vulnerable but it took the flexibility of Saabi Ama to scoop the ball off the goal line.
The Ghanaians regrouped and managed to grab the opener from the spot when Amankwah was brought flying in the penalty box. Amenuku took a dicey one beyond goalkeeper Mandy five minutes after the half hour mark to send the stadium chanting. Blending zeal and flair, young Leticia Zikpi held the midfield intact with loads of talent to underscore why she remained the brightest spot on the turf.
With only two minutes to the recess, the South Africans drew even with a neat volley from their 16-year old inspirational skipper Nyandeni Wompumelelo.
Nyandeni against the run of play picked a ball from the midfield and had the better of her maker by shielding well before volleying the ball over advancing keeper Quansah. The Ghanaians returned from the break in better frame and managed to notch the winner in the 65th minute with a strike from substitute Adu Twumwaah Florence in a characteristic manner that brought the stadium to its feet.
The player who had just replaced Annin Henrietta connected beautifully a move masterminded by creative Zikpi from an acute angle that left keeper Mandy with the only duty of retrieving the ball from the net.
