CFR Cluj snubs Michael Essien, claims he is too old

Michael Essien will need to search for a new Club after being snubbed by Romania powerhouse CFR Cluj.

The Ghanaian international was in talks with the Club after leaving Indonesian side Persib Bandung who deemed him excess to weight.

Persib Bandung refused to hand space to the midfielder at the end of the season.

Essien has since been in negotiation with CFR Cluj with an attempt to get a shot at European football one more time before hanging his boots.

At age 35, the midfielder is yet to retire from the game with a latest effort to join the Romanian giants.

CFR Cluj manager Edward Iordanescu believes the player’s age will not favor his side as a supposed £1million a year deal hit a snag.

“There were some discussions about signing Michael Essien before I came to the club, but they never came to fruition. I don’t know what amounts were involved, but I did not need the player.” he quoted by The Sun.

“I stopped Essien’s transfer to CFR Cluj. I already have a lot of experienced players who our youngsters can look up to.

“At present I don’t need players aged 36 or 37. We already have a valuable squad.”

The former Olympique Lyon star chalked great success at English Club Chelsea when he won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the League Cup on top of his Champions League medal during nine years at Stamford Bridge.
