The former Sports Minister believes the reason for the dwindling fortunes of the Ghana Premier League is due to the direct ownership of clubs by GFA members.

E.T Mensah is of the thinking that the Ghana Premier League (GPL) is on the decline because the members of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are the same persons who own the clubs competing in the league.

The Ghana Premier League (GPL) has come under severe scrutiny by stakeholders in the football industry and the former boss of the Ministry of Youth and Sports is the latest to add his voice to the debate.

According to E.T Mensah, it is very common these days to see the leadership of the Ghana FA own the clubs, hence making decision taking a problem.

“Almost all the GFA members own clubs or are directly managing a club, unlike my time that the likes of Ben Kouffie, Alhaji Jawula, who were GFA chairmen weren’t managing or owing a club.

“Although they had clubs that they supported before, but it wasn’t like this and that is reason why the Ghana league is not all that attractive as before,” he told Hot FM.

Mensah is renowned to have introduced the idea of the top-flight league in Ghana to go professional in the 1993-94 season.
