Accra Hearts of Oak got back to winning ways with a 4-0 victory over Heart of Lions at the Cape Coast Stadium on Wednesday after going four games without a win.

The Phobians made their intentions clear right from the blast of the whistle, with striker Selasi Adjei testing the agility of Lions goalkeeper Morzart Adjetey with a powerful strike from 30 yards out after 3 minutes.

After mesmerising the visitors’ defence, Togolese-import Foovi Aguidi squared for Selasi Adjei, who concluded the beautiful action inside the back of net to put Hearts ahead after 6 minutes.

However, the goal scorer sustained an injury in the process and was replaced by Kenneth Okoro in the 9th minute.

The visitors showed glimpses of finding their footing, with striker Mohammed Tanko finding himself in Hearts’ box with a ball and enough space. However, he was closed down by Inusah, who conceded a corner in the process.

The resultant kick did not yield any positive result as Hearts caught the Lions on the break, with Emmanuel Hayfords’ long pass linking Foovi, who beat goalkeeper Adjetey to double the Phobians’ lead.

Foovi stole the show in the 37th minute with a flamboyant strike which caught the Lions keeper off guard to register his second and third for Hearts.

Eric Kumi made it 4-0 by the 44th minute with a sizzling strike to put the game to bed.

The game delved into a physical engagement in the second half as both sides were reduced to ten men in the 54th minute when goalkeeper Abdoulaye Soulama and Lions defender Hudu Yakubu were shown the exit following a heated altercation.

Both coaches made some tactical substitutions in the last quarter as Emmanuel Hayford was replaced by Richard Yamoah for Hearts, with the Lions bringing on Sackey Osman for Isaac Twum.

Heart of Lions pressed on for a consolation in the dying embers of the game but were denied by the defence of the Phobians, who are recording their heaviest victory since the 2013-2014 season, when they defeated Real Tamale United by 4-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The win is the club’s first in six games after beating regional rivals Accra Great Olympics in match week 17.

Hearts now sit 11th on the league with seven games to end the season.
