Brazilian Ambassador to grace 39th SWAG awards on May 17

The Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana Her Excellency Irene Vida Gala will be one of the special guests of honour to grace the 39th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards gala night to be staged at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra on May 17, 2014.

According to a press statement by the General Secretary of the SWAG William Dodzie Ezah, the upcoming ceremony would certainly be an improvement of the previous awards as all the Awards ceremonies have been impressive and successful.

He noted that the awards which began in 1974 has been running continually and has improved every year.

Mr. Ezah said this year being a World Cup year has forced the Association to organize the awards earlier which is very good for its members, sports personalities and sports fans.

He hinted that some companies who have contributed to the development and promotion of sports in Ghana and also supported the Black Stars qualification to their third successive World Cup would be honored with special certificates and rewards.

He named some of the companies as Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), Unibank, the official bank of the Black Stars and others.

According to the SWAG General Secretary some individuals like Kennedy Agyapong of Kenpong Travel & Tours fame, Coach Kwesi Appiah, Coach Silas Tetteh, GFA President Kwesi Nyantekyi, Ben Nunoo Mensah, Chairman of the Ghana Weightlifting Association would be rewarded by the body of sports journalists in Ghana.

The SWAG at the beginning of the year released the names of some sports personalities to be rewarded including the Black Satellites who placed third at the 2013 World Youth Championships in Turkey, Clifford Aboagye who won the bronze ball, Ebenezer Assifuah who was named as the best goals scorer and winner of the golden boot, Juliana Arkoh who won eight medals at the African Weight lifting Championship in Morocco, 2013 Cowbell National Tour best cyclist, Samuel Anim, Swimmer Ophilia Swayne, Jane Ayieyam of the Black Maidens, Abraham Ayitey who exceled in Badminton on the continent and boxer Patrick Allotey.

The highlight of the 39th SWAG awards night would be who wins the best footballer of the year which is a contest for Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and Kwadwo Asamoah.

The Sports Personality of the year would be decided between Juliana Arkoh, Asamoah Gyan and James Kwesi Appiah.

Apart from MTN who are the headline sponsors of the event, some companies like Activa Insurance, Stanbic Bank, Voltic Mineral Water, Erke Sports, Promasidor, Goil Ghana Ltd and Guinness have agreed to be part of the 39th Awards.
