‘I didn’t ask Otumfuo to pay me GHC5bn’

Dr. Kofi Kodua Sarpong has refuted media reports that he was demanding Otumfuo Osei Tutu II refund GHS500,000 (GHC5bn) owed him by Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

An Accra based newspaper, Final Whistle, reported in its Tuesday, August 13 edition that Dr K.K. Sarpong made the request in his handing over notes to Otumfuo Osei II after he tendered in his resignation as Executive Chairman of the club.

The paper quoted a source as saying, “Dr K.K. Sarpong is bent on recouping the money he spent on the day-to-day running of the club during his three-year spell at the club”.

However, Dr K.K. Sarpong in a telephone interview with Ghanaweb.com on Tuesday flatly denied the report.

He explained that the said amount was the contributions of some management members, including Alhaji Lamin who opted to offer a helping hand when the club was bedevilled by financial challenges hence the need to pay back those involved.

Dr K.K. Sarpong further divulged that it was the Accounts Department that came out with the figure and not him.

“It was the Accounts Department that came out with GHS500,000 after their deductions and not me. Whoever said that I personally put the figure in my note is just being disingenuous,” he stressed.

It was against this backdrop that he questioned how contents of the report he presented to Otumfuo were leaked to the media.

“Well, I am very surprise because this was supposed to be confidential, and how did the media got wind of it,” he rhetorically asked.
