SIC supports annual SWAG Match

Accra, Feb. 25, GNA - State Insurance Company (SIC) Limited, on Wednesday presented GHC 14,000 to the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) to support SWAG's annual match.

The company has also initiated GHC 500,000 personal accident insurance cover for players and officials of defending champions Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Kpando Heart of Lions.

This is to ensure the best of performance from the two clubs in the clash of the SIC/Nyemitei SWAG Cup to give soccer fans their money's worth. Mr Peter Osei Duah, Managing Director of SIC said the donation was part of their contribution towards the development of sports in the country.

The gesture of the company is to support the Association in its organisation of this year event, which will take a two legged format. Mr Dua said the company also cherishes the contribution of sports journalists towards sports development and it hoped that the gesture would serve as a major motivation for them to continue with their support for activities of SWAG.

SIC is the headline sponsor of the annual challenge Cup which will also be in memory of the late H. P. Nyemitei, an astute sports administrator and past Managing Director of SIC and a Patron of SWAG. Ackah Anthony, President of SWAG who received the cheque on behalf of the Association, expressed appreciation to the company for their continuous support to activities of SWAG.

He indicated that this years' event which will be a two-legged format, with the first leg fixed for Friday, March 6, at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra, with the second leg arranged on completion of the premiership at the Baba Yara Sports stadium in Kumasi. Mr Anthony said the decision to play the match in a two-legged format was a step towards developing the annual SWAG match into a full blown tournament.

The SWAG President called on soccer fans to come in their numbers t have a good time on the Independence Day and to cheer up their teams to victory.

Jerry Asare - a management member of Kotoko said his outfit is honoured to participate in the much respected competition and promised that his boys will deliver on the day.

He said they have taken the game with all seriousness because it will serve as a major preparatory ground for them ahead of the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Champions League game against Khemmit of Morocco on March 15.

Neil Armstrong, Management Consultant to Heart of Lions also noted that they are bent on making a mark in the history of Ghana football and will use the occasion as a stepping stone to achieve their goal. The match is also expected to serve as a befitting holiday package for the entire nation, especially for soccer fans as Ghana celebrates her 52nd Independence Anniversary Celebration on the same day. 25 Feb. 09
