Closed-door match for Appiah

as Spurs reach D-Day on transfer

The decision on whether to sign Stephen Appiah on a free transfer will be reached in the close future. 9 comments have been left on this story Article continues below...

Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah should learn today whether he will be offered a contract by Tottenham as the club have arranged a match behind closed doors at the training ground before making their decision, according to various insiders.

The club have serious reservations about his fitness after so long out of the game following his dispute with former side Fenerbahce and want to decide on whether to strike a deal now or move on to other targets with the transfer window now halfway towards closure.

Appiah has been training with the club since the start of last week and his quality and work-rate have impressed the coaching staff at White Hart Lane. But with less than five months of the season remaining, and Spurs desperate for an immediate fix to their midfield inadequacies, the club feel they could not afford to wait for any length of time for Appiah to get up to the level of fitness required to play in the Premier League.
