Ghana striker Joetex Frimpong has been handed a four-match ban by the Swiss football authorities.

The 25-year-old, who plays for Swiss side Young Boys, was sent off for hitting an opponent during last week's league game against St. Gallen.

The Swiss Football Federation's disciplinary committee also fined Frimpong US$1,100 for the assault on defender Jurgen Giasula.

The striker could have been banned for six games but the committee reduced the ban to four matches after watching the incident on video.

The committee reduced the ban because the Ghana striker was provoked by Giasula.

Young Boys say they will not appeal against the decision to ban their highly-rated striker.

"We are satisfied with the outcome of the ruling by the Swiss Football Federation's disciplinary committee," Young Boys spokesman Stephane Ftauffeger told BBC Sport.

"They rightly spotted that Frimpong was provoked by the player of St. Gallen.

"Frimpong is a disciplined player but he was pushed to the wall the taunts of the opponent."

Frimpong has impressed since joining Young Boys from Tunisian side Sc Sfaxien in February.

The Ghana international is the highest goal scorer in the history of the African Champions League with 14 goals.

He is also a twice winner of the competition with Nigerian side Enyimba in 2003 and 2004.
