Profile: Derek Asamoah

Derek Asamoah, the Ghanaian-born forward-liner for Chester City FC, England has attained instant cult status with plans afoot to grant him the ?Freedom of the City? of Chester. This has come about because Derek has single-handedly rescued the Coca Cola league division from the bottom of the table with impending relegation to the Conference division.

In three successive games the promising gem has ultimately won all the games for is relegating threatened club and thus pulling Chester city FC from the relegation zone. Asamoah's hat-trick against Boston created all the difference for his side to placed in a comfortably in the Coca Cola Division league table.

He dashed the hopes of Boston in the crucial match that Boston needed to win to not only to sustain their superiority but more importantly to be in the top here. Chester FC also could ill-afford to lose. With a few minutes before half time, Asamoah sent a 6 yards low drive to give Chester FC their first goal. The second half got of to a great start for Chester FC as the ?man on a mission? Asamoah doubled their tally by putting the ball away high into the opposition?s net. Soon after resumption of play, Derek?s rare pace caught Boston again on 61st minute as he chalked up a Hat Trick by latching onto a trough ball from Ben Davies. Derek was rested on the 70th minute and with the pressure relaxed from Chester, Boston managed a consolation goal.

Derek joined Chester City FC on loan from Lincoln City in January after being relentlessly chased by his former manager Keith Curle. The manager was soon after replaced and owing to some disagreements in his contract, Derek was sidelined for about 6 consecutive games resulting in the side losing all matches and slipping to the bottom of the table and facing imminent relegation. Following potential revolt from fans who had made serious representation to the management about his absence and the abysmal failures of the club on the pitch, an SOS was sent and Derek re-emerged in the side

Derek Asamoah has elevated himself to star status by exhibiting high soccer skills. He is so direct and resolute smart and fast and can do almost everything he wishes to do the round leather. ?He is actually gifted and talented and so daring to watch?. Jeremy Arnold, the of the Chester City FC?s supporters union described him as the club?s saviour.

As if three goals in the previous match were not enough for the diminutive striker Asamoah opened the scoring sheet within a few minutes of the second half with a deadly strike from a close range in their game against Oxford United.

His second goal in the game was dubbed as ?probably the best goal ever to be seen at the Saunders Honda Stadium? and was enough to push Chester City away from the dreaded drop zone.

Born in Ghana, Asamoah will be cerebrating his 25th birthday on May Day. He moved to join his parents in England in 1988. Derek had interests in football from infancy and this continued in his teenage years playing for Barking and Slough Town, both in England.

He is a skilful striker and is also capable of playing on the wing. Asamoah joined Lincoln City after a fall out with the Mansfield Town F.C. management for a nominal fee. His other previous clubs were Northampton Town F.C. where he made over 100 appearances and Hampton and Richmond where he began his footballing career. His nickname, at least at Northampton, was "Del-Boy".

During the revolutionary days of Herbert Mensah, Derek Asamoah was invited to play for Kotoko and he endeared himself to both the fans and the management with his wizardry. Derek stayed with Kotoko for almost a year before returning to England to join Hampton & Richmond FC.

Derek caught the eye of the scouts from Northampton Town FC and after an impressive trial period was given a 2 year contract scoring 13 goals for the club before moving to Mansfield Town. Derek scored on 5 occasions under manager Keith Curle at Mansfield but again his pace and skills were urgently needed at Lincoln City, where he moved after a brief period with Mansfield and also scoring 2 goals (once against Chester City)

Derek reunited with his old manager Curle when he moved on loan to Chester City. With Chester facing imminent relegation, Derek has been the Knight in the Shining Armour to single-handedly rescue and push the team to mid-table.

Derek is dubbed the fastest and deadliest striker in the division and his performance ratings for games in the media have been consistently above 7 out of 10. In his 5 years professional career, Derek has won the man of the match no less than 20 times with one of the best discipline records in the game.

Derek Asamoah?s prowess has generated a lot of interest from several clubs from the Championship division and also the Premiership seeking his signature for the 2006/7 football season.
