Zumdick to invite more professionals

Accra, Oct 26, GNA - Coach Ralph Zumdick of the national U-23 soccer team, the Black Meteors, has said he will invite more professional players to beef up the squad as the team prepares for their next Olympic Games qualifier against Zambia in December.

Zumdick who guarded his side to record the nation's first ever victory over South Africa in a competitive football said he will invite more attackers plying their trade outside the country to build a potent partnership with the local strikers.

"Any player who will be invited will have to be better than our boys here to merit a regular place in the team" he told the GNA Sports.

The coach said though the team has a genuine problems upfront, no professional player could have an automatic entry into the team which, he said, will be working towards improvement in the next few weeks.

He told the GNA Sports that though he was satisfied with the team's narrow win against the South Africans, the team's goal drought problem manifested itself during the 90 minutes action packed game.

On his general impression on his side performance, Zumdick he said the South Africans was a strong opponent who also came to win and was happy that the Meteors won the maximum points at stake.

"To me, we have three points as stake now, and that is very refreshing. Cameroon, the current defending champions also won 1-0 and so all is about the points though we have to score more goals," he stressed.

Defending his 4-2-4 tactics the coach said technically he knew playing more players upfront could bring the goals and expressed disappointment that the desired results was not yielded.

He conceded that there is a lot of work to do at every department of the team in order to qualify for the Olympic Games slated for Athens, Greece next year.

Kwadjo Poku of Kumasi King Fiasal fame scored a second half vital goal for the Meteors in their crucial tie against the Amagluglug lads to register the country's first international victory over the South Africans when they locked horns at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
