Youth group use football to promote peace

Bolgatanga, Aug.31, GNA – The Soe-Youth Association, a youth group in Bolgatanga on Tuesday organized a football tournament in the Municipality aimed at promoting peaceful atmosphere during and after the general elections this year.

Various youth groups drawn from eight communities in the Bolgatanga Municipality took part in the football competition geared towards enhancing peace in the Region during and after the 2012 elections.

At the climax of the three day tournament in Soe, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Mr Akolbire Opam Brown said there was the need to use football as a tool for promoting peace and unity among the youth and the nation as a whole as electioneering campaigns gather momentum.

Mr Opam Brown said for continuous development to progress on in the Region, there was the need for the people to unite and live peacefully as brothers and sisters, adding that peace was a prerequisite for national development.

He therefore called on the youth to avoid divisive utterances that had the tendency of disrupting the peace prevailing in the Region and across the country.

Mr Edward Ayagle, Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, reiterated the need for the youth to lead the crusade in promoting peace in this year’s elections.

The organizers of the tournament in interaction with the GNA Sports said the tournament was organized to promote peace in the run-up to the December polls.

The participating Youth groups included the Soe, Yipala, Zaare, Yorogo, Dapotidongo, Sokabisi, Zobisi and Tanzui communities.
