We wanted to give other players the opportunity – Appiah

Black Stars head coach Kwasi Appiah says the opportunity for other fringe players to play for Ghana is the reason why most of the first team players were left out of Ghana’s squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Japan.

Team captain Asamoah Gyan, Andre Ayew, Michael Essien and Kwadwo Asamoah are among the players excused from travelling to Japan after Ghana’s 2-1 win over Zambia on Friday.

Addressing a pre-match press conference, Appiah noted that because there aren’t many FIFA friendly days, it is important to use such games to monitor other players who can also break into the team.

Appiah took the opportunity to hail Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, noting that his return to the Black Stars delighted him adding that his attitude on and off the pitch is an example for all to follow.
