WAFA dares Asante Kotoko in season opener

Asante Kotoko Asante Kotoko

A tough and exciting duel is anticipated at the Sogakope Astro pitch on Saturday where homesters West Africa Football Academy (WAFA) hosts Kumasi Asante Kotoko in the opening match of the 2015/16 Premiership season in Ghana.

This game precedes seven others that would be played on Sunday as the overly delayed Ghanaian football season finally gets underway this weekend.

Last season, WAFA defeated Asante Kotoko 1-0 at the same venue at a time the Porcupines were defending league champions, and, they will be eager to repeat the dose on Saturday.

In fact, Kotoko have never beaten WAFA former Feyenoord Academy away from Kumasi in a competitive game and faces a tough task in ending that run in Saturday’s encounter.

They will come up against a very determined and hungry WAFA side who have had a good pre-season behind them including travelling to neigbouring Togo to engage their local national team in two friendlies which they won.

Coach John Killa should have found his footing in the Ghanaian game by now after guiding them through last season as they finished 10th in the Ghana Premiership.

Kotoko themselves have also enjoyed a decent pre-season campaign as they won the G-6 tournament and also trekked to Libya to play two friendlies with Al Etihad FC, losing one and drawing the other.

Coach David Duncan will be in charge of his first full season at the club and will hope his imprint on the team is clearly established as the season wore on with many bookmakers writing them odds on favourites for the title.

That ambition will be tested to the fore at Sogakope on Saturday afternoon when they come up against a WAFA side that looked impressive at home last season and will be out looking for all three points in this game.
