VALCO academicals' tournament kicks off next week

The fourth VALCO Academicals Football Tournament for Senior Secondary Schools, kicks off at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday 29 October and ends on Friday November 2 2001.

A statement signed by Mr Kingsley Inkoom, a representative of the organisers, said the tournament would involve six schools that qualified from the preliminary stages in the northern and southern sectors of the country.

The schools representing the southern sector are Aggrey Memorial Secondary School from Cape Coast in the Central Region, Takoradi Secondary School and St. John's School, both from Sekondi in the Western Region.

Asanteman Secondary School from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, Bogatanga Secondary School and Tamale Secondary School from the Upper East and Northern regions respectively, will represent the northern sector.

The competition, which was instituted in 1998, was at the initiative of Professor John Evans Atta-Mills, former vice-president and one time member of the Ghana academicals soccer team.

The statement said a national academicals team would be selected at the end of the competition to represent the country against sister teams from West Africa in a sub-regional competition.
