US names World Cup squad

Ghana's first-round opponents - The United States- have named their 23-man squad for next month's World Cup in Germany

The US men's national team was finalized on Tuesday.

Coach Bruce Arena, who guided the U.S. to a surprising quarterfinal run in the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan, made the announcement at 6 p.m. EDT on ESPN's "SportsCenter."

The team is led by veteran goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who plays in the German Bundesliga for Borussia Monchengladbach. Keller, who went 10-1-3 with a 0.57 goals-against average in World Cup qualifying, did not play in the 2002 Cup because of the stellar play of Brad Friedel, who subsequently retired from international competition.

Ranked fourth in the world, the U.S. is in arguably the toughest four-team group in the World Cup, Group E. The Americans first face the second-ranked Czech Republic on June 12, then traditional power Italy five days later and the dangerous Ghana on June 22. Only the top two teams from each of the eight groups advance to the knockout rounds.
