Tamale to host Ghana game

The Tamale Sports Stadium in Tamale would host its first ever Ghana match ever on March 30 when the Black Stars begin the preliminary round qualifiers of the new African Nations Championship.

Ghana will play Niger at home in the first leg fixture of the new tournament designed by CAF for players who play in the various domestic leagues in Africa.

The Black Stars drawn in Zone West B play Niger on March 30 at the newly constructed 20,000 all-seater capacity stadium before the travelling to Niamey in two weeks time for the reverse fixture.

The Tamale Sports Stadium, with a natural grass playing surface was built for the 2008 African Nations Cup by Ghana.

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi confirming the decision of the FA to play the match in Tamale says, the move formed part of a broader decision to utilize all the stadiums in the country for national matches.

“We (the FA) decided to play all our matches at the four new stadia.

“Matches of the national teams would be spread across the venues in the country and this would help bring the people closer to the teams,” the FA President said to www.ghanafa.org.

The Africa Nations Championships is a new tournament designed by CAF for only home-based players of its member countries and it will come off in Ivory Coast from the 22nd of February till the 8th of March 2009.
