Sunyani Ghatel Ladies win Gala competition

Kumasi, March 10, GNA - Sunyani Ghana Telecom (Ghatel) Ladies beat Ash-Town Ladies club of Kumasi 2-1 in the finals of this year's Ashanti Regional Women's soccer gala competition held in Kumasi.

They took home a trophy and 200,000 cedis cash donated by the National Sports Council (NSC), organisers of the competition while Ash-Town Ladies, the defending champions received 150,000 cedis with Medonna Ladies getting 100,000 cedis for placing third.

Other teams that participated in the competition were Osei Tutu Ladies, Fabulous Ladies, Oforikrom Ladies, Kumasi Ghatel Ladies and Envoy Ladies.

Sunyani Ghatel on their way to annexing the trophy beat Medonna 2-0 while Ash-Town beat Fabulous Ladies 4-3.

In the final decider, it was the Ash-Town Ladies who scored first in the fifth minute through Ruth Appiah when she connected home a corner kick.

Ghatel Sunyani who seemed undaunted by the early goal contained their composure and levelled up the scores in the 16th minute through skipper, Doreen Awuah.

When everything seemed to be coasting to a drawn game, Rita Dwamena Ghatel Ladies soared above her markers to nod home a corner kick in the 88th minute for the match winner.

In a closing address, Mr C.K. Yeboah, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Football Association (RFA), in his closing address stressed the need for the teams to strive to engage in more friendly matches to tune them up for the impending Regional Women's soccer league.
