Stars have to improve before CHAN tourney - Konadu

Head Coach of the Local Black Stars Maxwell Konadu says his team need to improve before next year’s Championship of African Nations tournament (CHAN) in South Africa.

Ghana beat Senegal 3-1 in the finals of the GoTV Wafu Cup to claim the title at the Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday but the team has come under a lot of flak following their uninspiring performance.

Ghana won Silver in the first edition in 2009 but followed up with a dreadful display in Sudan in 2011 after failing to go past the group stages.

Konadu who helped Akwasi Appiah to qualify Ghana to next year’s World Cup becomes the first Coach to lift the trophy but knows that the team is not good enough to win the CHAN tournament in January.

Speaking after the game the former Kumasi Asante Kotoko manager says some changes will be made before the competition.

“We need to step up our game a bit,” Konadu said

“We just have to do far better than we have done here because out there in South Africa the competition is going to be tougher than this” he added

“We will surely beef up the squad and make sure we train harder than this”

“I am not going to make a wholesome change because when you look at this squad the preparation wasn’t enough but they have worked above themselves to lift the title”

“The players deserve credit for the hard work but I think we have a lot more to do” Maxwell concluded
