Skipper prays for a long-term contract for coach

Accra, Nov 16, GNA - The skipper of the senior national team, Black Stars, Stephen Appiah has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to maintain the services of the present German coach Ralf Zumdick in order not to commit the same mistake four years ago which robed the Stars of the qualification to the last World Cup.

In a post-match interview, Appiah expressed confidence in the abilities of the Zumdick, and said that coupled with the prevailing spirit in camp, things are likely to be better for the team.

He expressed the hoped that all stakeholders would tread cautiously in the supreme interest of Ghana football in order not to put spokes in the teams effort to make history this time around, by terminating the three-month contract with Zumdick as happened four years ago.

Stephen Appiah, who won his first match since assuming the captainship of the Stars early this year said the victory was a good start, which hopefully, would be replicated in Wednesday's return encounter in Kumasi.

He said the Somalis played very well especially in the first half, which did not surprise them, as they had anticipated the visitors to frustrate them. The skipper said even though the going was tough initially "we knew we were definitely gong to win at the end of the game since we were playing to the specification of the coach".

On whether the team would be able to keep up with this performance in other matches, Appiah said even though the stars started well in a similar manner four years ago, the performance could not be sustained; but expressed the hope that things will work out well this time around.

Coach Zumdick said the victory was a good start, and was hopeful that it would be maintained in Wednesday's return match.

He said there would be changes in the team that played on Sunday since Bayern's Samuel Osei Kuffour and Lyon's Michael Essien will leave to rejoin their clubs on Monday.

It would be recalled that the Black Stars started the last World Cup qualifier in similar emphatic manner when they beat Sierra Leone 5-1 under coach Guissepe Dossena but the team was soon thrown into turmoil when the sport ministry refused to extend the contract of the coach.
