Schalke Chase Free Agent Stephen Appiah

According to a report on Spox.com, Gelsenkirchen outfit Schalke 04 are considering making a move for highly-rated midfielder Stephen Appiah, who is a free agent.

Head coach Felix Magath is keen to add some depth to his squad, but the Konigsblauen lack the financial resources to sign a high profile name. Appiah therefore appears to be the perfect candidate for the club.

The Ghanaian international appeared to be on his way to Schalke in the summer of 2007, but Appiah eventually opted to stay at Fenerbahce.

The 28-year-old has been without a club since he left the Istanbul giants on a free transfer in the summer of 2008. Appiah has continually been linked with a move to Italy, but no transfer has materialised due to concerns over his fitness.

The report suggests that, aside from Schalke, another Bundesliga outfit and several Ligue 1 sides are interested in securing Appiah's services.
