SUGHA and GHANSU sign MOU

Accra, July 3, GNA - The two main supporters unions in the country, the Ghana National Supporters Union (GHANSU) and the Supporters of Union of Ghana (SUGHA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to form a united force to support all the national teams during domestic and international events.

The leadership of the two bodies signed a peace pact brokered by the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) to have a unified supporters' front to ably rally behind all the national teams, especially the Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations which is just around the corner.

At a press conference on Tuesday to brief the media on the latest developments within the supporting fraternity, Mr Benson T. Baba, President of the GOC who chaired the occasion emphasized the need to have a united support front, which will seek to project the image of the country at all championships irrespective of the event.

Mr Baba recalled incidents of reported clashes between the two supporters group during the 25th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, which he said posited Ghanaians fans on divided fronts which had a negative effect on the country.

The GOC President described the signing of the peace pact between the two bodies as a landmark in the history of Ghana sports and urged the members of the two groups to use sports to promote peace and unity among themselves.

Mr Abraham Boakye alias "One Man Supporter", Chairman of GHANSU said the two bodies were motivated by their patriotism to put the nation forward by burying their differences and join hands together for a national cause.

He lauded the decision of his colleague, Sarfo Abebrese to collaborate as a good omen since they both have the same objective of supporting and improving Ghana sports.

Mr Abebrese urged members of the two groups to put the nation first in all their activities and expressed optimism that the unification of the two bodies will push Ghana sports to the highest point on the continent and the world as well.

The two bodies have however not as yet settled on a new name for the united force but plans are far afoot to get a suitable one. The members of the two groups led by their leaders later shook hands and exchange pleasantries to signify the birth of a united force. The two groups have also promised to rally supporters across the breadth and length of the country to support the Black Stars as they seek for a record equaling fifth title at next year's African Cup of Nations.
