Referee assaulted by fans at Swedru Sports Stadium

Agona Swedru, Dec 30, GNA - A 85th-minute controversial goal by Nana Evans of Swedru ALL Blacks brought a second division soccer match with local rivals Fankobaah to an abrupt end at the Swedru Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Fankobaah took the lead in the 50th minute through an own goal. However, ALL Blacks equalized through Willie Brown of Starlets '91 fame who fired a terrific shot from a 30 meter-free-kick, which could not be grabbed by Fankobaah goal-keeper, Haruma Essilfie and Nana Evans, who was hovering around the "18" tapped the ball into the net.

As soon as Referee Michael Arthur- Dadzie from Cape Coast whistled for the equalizer, irate fans chased him and the referee had no option than to take to his heels.

The angry fans claimed the Referee should have whistled for an infringement against Nana Evans for wrongfully challenging the goalkeeper before tapping the ball into the net.

The three police personnel on duty managed to escort Referee Arthur-Dadzie to the dressing room after he had been manhandled by the mob.

Referee Arthur-Dadzie later lodged a complaint at the Swedru Police Station, and said he could identify some of the fans that attacked him. The Police are investigating.
