Queens+Weah Lose To Meteors

The national women's soccer team, the Black Queens, Captained by the mercurial and giant sized George Oppon Weah, Africa's proud testimony in rich soccer talents and prowess alongside his close compatriot, James Debah in an unlikely team for a football match, succumbed two goals to nil in a charity fund raising game at the Accra Stadium yesterday in the evening.

They lost to no other side than a select side of national team coach Burkhard Ziese's local assembly of the Olympic team, the Black Meteors.

The highly entertaining match, with Burkhard in the middle as the referee which also saw the likes of goalkeeper Edward Ansah on the Meteors bench and Black Stars Welfare Officer Cudjoe Fianoo once come out to shout instructions to the Meteors, it was strikes by Joe Tagoe (16th minute) and Barrasu Ahmed (36th minute) which separated the two sides.

The Meteors had earlier on walloped a Greater Accra regional select side which featured Queens keeper Sulemana Memunatu 6:0 in 25 minutes of action. The meteors were later to meet their match in the real Queens team, who matched their male counterparts boot for boot with referee Ziese providing the necessary protection for the women.

Oppong Weah, whose contribution was largely ceremonial, showed glimpses of his active days with some magical dribbling while keeper Memunatu won the applause of the sparse crowd with splendid saves.

The game lasted 40 minutes.
