Qualification is far from over -Jones

Black Meteors coach sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio has called on Ghanaians to remain cautious as the battle continuous following his teams impressive victory over South Africa’s amaglug-glu.

The Meteors defeated South Africa 3-1 at the FNB stadium in Johannesburg to boost their chances of picking the only ticket in their group which also includes the Nigeria’s “Dream Team”.

The Super Eaglets of Nigeria defeated the Black Meteors 3-2 in Abuja a couple of months ago and top the group with 4 points after drawing 1-1 with the South Africans in Johannesburg.

On paper, the Black Meteors appear to have the brightest chance of qualifying for the Beijing Olympics. They have the advantage of two home matches against South Africa and Nigeria. To many Ghanaians it’s an easy task for the Ghanaians. But Attuquayefio calls for caution and says “it’s not a done deal.”

“ “I don’t want us to be our own enemies by falling into the trap of complacency. We cannot start jubilating about our qualification when we have two crucial battles to confront. I do agree we have an excellent opportunity to qualify for the Beijing Olympics. But we need to continue to keep our focus. We can’t lift our foot off the pedal.

South Africa will come to Ghana fully charged, not unaware they have a mathematical chance of qualification. More importantly, they will also be playing for pride. We therefore have a greater responsibility to maintain our focus. Once we keep that balance and discipline, I know we can fulfill the high expectation of making it to China”, coach Attuquayefio told allghanasoccer.com.

He used the opportunity to praise the entire team for remaining discipline and self belief before and during the game.

The Black Meteors next game is against South Africa next October at the El-Wak Stadium.
