Quaison: I’ve always wanted to play for Sweden

Palermo midfielder Robin Kwamina Quaison says he wants to commit his international future to Sweden after representing the country in the junior categories and participating in unofficial matches with the Blagult.

The 21-year-old was born in Stockholm to a Ghanaian father from Takoradi and a Swedish mother. In an interview with an Accra-based radio station in 2014, Quaison reiterated his willingness to switch allegiance in favour of the Black Stars after he was snubbed by the Swedish U21 team for a European Championship qualifier.

However, he has been called up to the U21 team, featuring against Moldova last week, after which he declared that Sweden had always been his first choice.

“It has always been Sweden. Playing for Ghana has never been an option. I've said it to my agent and now I’m saying it to the press that it has always been Sweden,” Quaison told Swedish website hd.se/sport.

“Now I’m focusing on my club Palermo and I hope to join the Swedish team any day to play for my country," he added.

The former AIK Fotboll player was a member of the Swedish squad that participated in the Kings Cup in Thailand two years ago, scoring twice, but has never been officially capped with Sweden.

“I am Swedish. I was born here and this is where I grew up. I have been waiting for the day I would get to share the dressing room with Kim Kallstrom, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Johan Elmander and everyone else in the Swedish squad,” he said.
