Police prepared for CAN 2008

Ho, Oct. 12, GNA - Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) in charge of Human Resource Development, Mrs Joana Osei-Poku on Friday said the Police were prepared to ensure a safe and incident- free CAN 2008 Tournament to be hosted by the country.

Mrs osei-Poku said the Police Administration is aware of the security challenge and was well prepared to brave the task for a peaceful and successful Tournament to allay the fears of the sporting public.

The Deputy Commissioner said this at the passing-out parade of 142 police recruits at the Volta Regional Police Training School in Ho. She added that the Police Administration remains committed to bringing crime rate in the country to the barest minimum and called for cooperation from the public for its success.

"It is the civic duty of members of the public to cooperate positively with the Police to enable them improve upon the quality of service rendered to the public", Mrs Osei-Poku said.

Mrs Osei-Poku therefore urged the public to provide the Police with relevant information to help it track down criminals and to also assist to expose Police officers who indulge in unprofessional and corrupt activities.

She congratulated the recruits and entreated them to let the skills and acknowledge acquired help them in the delivery of their performance coupled with high sense of professionalism and discipline.

Mrs Osei-Poku advised people who enlist into the Service with selfish ambitions to amass " ill-gotten" wealth or use the uniform to settle personal scores to reconsider their decision because the Service has no room for such people.

She said any officer who misconducts himself or herself would have no sympathy and protection from the Police Administration, since the Police Administration would not relent in its efforts to check illegal practices such as extortion, illegal motor checks, bribery, narcotic drug dealings and debt collection among others.

A total of six recruits won various awards with the overall best recruit going to General Recruit Martinson Dugbatey from Aburi Akuapim in the Eastern Region.

The recruits during their six months training underwent tuition in Human Rights, Acts and Decrees, Criminal Investigations, Law of Evidence, Practical Police Duties, English Language, Domestic Violence, Social Psychology, Policing Ethics, French and HIV/AIDS among others.
