German club Hamburg have signed Ghana midfielder Otto Addo on a three-year contract.

The 32-year-old was on the verge of beginning his coaching career after being released by relegated club Mainz 05 at the end of last season.

Originally he joined Hamburg to play with their junior team in the German third division league and also to help the coaching staff.

However he impressed the coaches of the senior team so much that he has signed a deal to play for the Uefa Cup campaigners.

"We can confirm that Otto Addo has signed the deal to play for our senior team," Hamburg spokesman Jorg Woerns told BBC Sport.

"His highly impressive performances for the junior team is the reason why the coaches asked him to join the top team."

Addo, who has already played some friendly matches for Hamburg, is not surprised at the move and he is still keen on helping the junior team.

"You will have to be prepared for everything as a professional," said the 33-year-old.

"I have also told the team that I am prepared to help the second team when I am needed. I am prepared for everything.

Addo's career has been dogged by a problem with his right knee, after suffering three cruciate ligament injuries since 2001.

Addo has not played for the Black Stars since the last year's World Cup in Germany.

But he is still eyeing a place in the team when the country hosts the African Cup of Nations next year.
