OPINION: Winning Formula for Black Stars 2002

I want to hint the Ghanaian football family and the BLACK STARS technical crew that if they want to remedy the loopholes in the team, especially the defence, then Sam Johnson should be used in the midfield while Agyeman Duah and E. Kuffour should be in defence.

Sam Johnson should not be dropped from the team because he is still active and very good. He is a multi-talented footballer who can play in many positions on the field but the best position for him in the BS is the midfield where he can use his experience, skills and versatility to direct and marshall the flow of the game.

His strength and high work rate make him a good candidate for the midfield. He is also a good scorer and worker of goals.

Some weaknesses of Johnson which many coaches seem to have overlooked is his weak aerial prowess and loss of concentration - and this is one of the reasons why the team concedes some cheap goals especially from crosses and pull-out.

We should remember that Johnson started his BS career as a midfielder at Tunisia 94 and he was very fantastic in his displays even though he played only a few matches because of injury.

Agyeman Duah is just one of the best defenders in Ghana right now, and he should have been part and parcel of the core team a long time ago.

He is very strong both on the ball and in the air, a good marker, well focused and doesn't lose concentration like Johnson or S. Kuffuor.

Emmanuel Kuffour should also be redeployed to defence because that is the area that has been giving the BS a lot of problems. Emman Kuffour's pace, strength and level of concentration will really help the STARS a lot. His speed will definitely give him the leverage to overlap and support the attack when necessary.

We should also remember that Kuffour is a natural defender but his ability to switch to attack or midfield is just a plus.

Let's remember that the team formation, pattern of play, player resource requirement as well as the realities and challenges in the BS are quite different from that of Hearts. Kuffour was only tried as a striker when Fameyeh left Hearts and he was able to play the role well. But that does not mean that he should continue playing as a striker in the BS because the team has more than enough striking power... Amoah, Ayew, Ohene, Ahinful, Preko, Akunor, Duah, I.Addo, Boakye, Arhin-Duah etc. Let him go back to the defence to provide a good cover-up for the keeper. If he must play deeper then it should be in the midfield but not as a stiker, because doing that will not amount to making the BEST use of your materials.

The BLACK STARS need strong, energetic, powerful players (especially in the defence) in order to be able to beat tough countries like Cameroon, S/A, Morrocco, Nigeria etc.

A defence line-up made up of E. Kuffour, J. Nettey, Gargo (or in midfield) S. Kuffour and Agyeman Duah, if properly handled, would be impregnable.

Let's fortify the defence line because that is where the major problem lies.

I am neither a coach nor manager but I believe my idea will work if properly implemented.

I WISH THE STARS THE BEST AT CAN 2002
