Nyantakyi Condemns media over concentration on foreign football

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi has expressed his misgivings following the promotion of foreign leagues by the Ghanaian media to the detriment of the local league.

He laid the blame of the downward trend of the local league to the over concentration on the foreign league by the media at the expense of the local competition, saying “The media has not helped much because they give little attention to the local league.”

Speaking at the signing of the broadcast rights for the telecast of the Glo Premier League, the FA boss expressed shock at the inundation of foreign leagues matches shown by Cinema Hall operators in the country, to the total neglect of the local league.

“I am looking forward to the day some of these video centre operators will display a local league match fixture involving Kessben FC and X1 Wise, I think it will be a game worth watching,” Mr. Nyantakyi added.

To Mr. Nyantakyi, it will take a concerted effort by the GFA, its Sponsors and the media for the local league to attain a high profile status.

He frowned on some sports journalists who go to the extent of nicknaming themselves after some foreign players.

According to him, the sports journalists appear well versed with the history of the foreign team players to the neglect of the local players, attests to his argument.

“If I ask one of you to mention the first eleven of RTU, there will be a problem, but you will be able to mention the first eleven of Liverpool or Atletico Madrid effortlessly,” the FA President noted.

He, however, urged the media to go the extra mile and project the local league for it to assume a high profile status, saying “The big leagues did not get to where they are today in a day, let's start from somewhere and we shall surely get there.”
