Ntim: Techiman City FC not eyeing premiership

Techiman City FC chairman, Charles Kwadwo Ntim, popularly known as Micky-Charles, has admitted that his team is aiming to survive relegation in the National Division One League and not focusing on snatching a place in the Ghana Premier League next season.

The former premier league side have had a slow start to the current campaign, recording two wins and two defeats in their opening five matches, which is not a huge matter of concern to club owner.

“The Zone is one of the toughest in the division because a lot of participating clubs are former premier league teams. Therefore, we’re planning to secure our place at least for this season,” Ntim told Goal.

“It takes hard work to survive in the zone phase, left alone targeting qualification. I’m not worried with our performance so far. When we eventually earn promotion to the premier league, financing the club will be different. We have started putting measures in place for the future. I believe we'd be able to make a good impact by then,” he said.

Ntim, who is also a member of the Division One League Board, defends the new format of the second-tier league. It is now made up of three zones, as opposed to two in the former system, consisting of 16 clubs each, with the winners qualifying to the premier league.

“This is the best format that can be used to improve the lower division. It’d end the perception of bribery and corruption in the middle league. If a club prepares well and tops the league log after the season, it qualifies to the Premier League. The new format will also put an end to tensions and chaos in the middle league as we have seen in the past.”

“In my zone, clubs like Real Tamale United, Berekum Arsenal and Boafoakwa Tano are the ones I believe will qualify to the premier league next season because they have good teams,” Ntim said.

Techiman City, formerly B.A Stars, lie sixth with seven points on the Zone One league log. They were relegated from the top-flight league in the 2010-11 season before it was purchased by new owners and moved from Brong Ahafo capital, Sunyani to Techiman.
