No FA Cup For 2002 Football Season

The Ghana Football Association has canceled the Football Association’s Cup also known as the FA Cup from its 2002 calendar. The competition regarded as the second most important FA sanctioned competition brings together all the clubs registered with the Football Association into one competition.

The winner of the FA cup plays in the African Cup Winner’s Cup competition, a tournament in which Asante Kotoko has become the first Ghanaian club to reach the finals.

The Chairman of the professional League Board Sylvester Mensa in an exclusive interview with myjoyonline observed that there would not be enough time to organize the tournament because of a simmering court issue between the Ghana football Association and Division One League Club Tudu Mighty Jets.

Tudu Mighty Jets obtained an injunction on the commencement of the Division One League, which has stalled the competition for close to five months. Sylvester Mensa contends that since the FA cup includes Division One League teams, and their league has not even begun, it will not be plausible for the FA Cup to be played.

In lieu of the FA Cup, the league standings will be used in determining which team plays in the African Cup Winners Cup. Kumasi Asante Kotoko, the club that finished second in the Premier League will play in the Cup Winners Cup. The third Club in the league standings Liberty Professionals will play in the CAF cup while the Champions, Hearts Of Oak play in the Champions League.
