Nigerian company to Sponsor Black stars

The Ghana subsidiary of Nigeria’s telecommunications giant Globacom is sponsoring Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, to the tune of US$9 million.

The package from Gobacom Mobile Ghana is worth US$1.8 million per annum over a five-year period, the Ghana News Agency reported on Friday.

Olabode Opeseitan, Head of Glo Public Relations, said that inclusive of the package was a US$500,000 performance-driven incentive that the team would enjoy as bonus in the event of winning the 2010 World Cup slated for South Africa. Similarly, the team will reap US$250,000 if it wins the Angola 2010 African Cup of Nations.

While the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has already received US$750,000 for this year’s quota, Glo is expected to top up when it rolls out as a cellular telecoms provider in the next few weeks. Opeseitan said US$1.5 million of the deal would be in cash and the extra US$300,000 would come as products for the team and its handlers.
