Nigeria's second females team in town for training tour

Accra, Sept 16, GNA - The national female Under-23 team of Nigerian is in Ghana for a two week training tour in preparation for next month's All African Games to be held in Abuja, Nigeria.

The team made up of 25 local players are under the technical direction of Coach Ismaila Mabo who has been very instrumental in the development of women soccer in Nigeria.

In an interview with the GNA Sports, Coach Mabo, who was a member of the Falcons technical bench in their three previous appearances at the Women World Cup said he chose Ghana because of the country's strong tradition in women soccer.

He said the team is mostly made up of young up and coming stars selected from clubs in the local league and expressed the hope to learn from Ghana's rich experience in women soccer.

"It is my hope that we play at least two or three local sides who would give us the expected opposition that we would enable us learn one or two new things in the game".

Coach Mabo said he was not happy with the absence of their Ghanaian counterparts for the All African Games.

He said even with Ghana's absence they would not take issues for granted because other countries like Cameroon and South Africa have strong women teams.

Coach Mabo who also qualified and handled the Falcon during the 2000 Sidney Olympics Games said the difference between their Under-23 and and the national side, the Falcons is not that huge as most of them play together in the local league.

"What the team lacked now is international exposure which their seniors have in abundance but judging from their level of response since arriving in Ghana it will not take them much time to come a par with their seniors".
