National women soccer association born

A national female soccer association known as the Ghana Women Soccer League Clubs Association (GHAWSOLCA) was on Saturday inaugurated in Accra to climax of a three-day congress by delegates of female clubs from all over the country.

The association, which vowed to seek a slot on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) elected seven officers to lead its quest for what they described at the "rightful place of women soccer in the country."

As its main objective, the organization plans to take over the Women's League Board, an arm of the GFA, which is tasked with the development of the female game.

The congress, which was the maiden and had representations from all the ten regions, drafted and approved a new constitution, which went through series of amendments.

According to GHAWSOLCA, their association will serve as an umbrella body for clubs all over the country and will present a common front to campaign for the need to develop women football to an appreciable standard.

Like the Ghana League Clubs Association, (GHALCA), GHAWSOLCA said their main focus will be on organising a competitive national women's soccer league after a sensitisation exercise.

The congress elected Mr. Ebenezer Tetteh Addo, who will have a two-year renewable term as chairman and Mr. Philip De-Graft Johnson as his vice.

Mr. Benjamin Fio Dalali won the position of the financial secretary and Mr Kobina Heyford was elected treasurer.

Mr. D. K Mensah was elected to represent the association on the executive council of the GFA, as an ex-officio member while Mr Francis Kudah, Mr George Lawson and Mr Ndakar Jaminja will function as ex officio members within the association.

Mr. Tetteh told the GNA Sports that the formation of the association was the first major step in ensuring that the female game was given equal prominence "as it is impressively gaining root in the country."

" Being able to get representations from every region is defiantly a sign of great things to come and we are optimistic that together we will succeed with the current determination and hard work," he said.
