Ministry to Review SWAG Membership

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Papa Owusu-Ankomah has announced that his Ministry is in the process of reviewing the membership of the Sports Writers' Association of Ghana (SWAG) with a view to making it more reliable as regards the promotion of sports in the country.

He said sports writers over the years have exhibited disunity, incompetence and traits of unprofessionalism in their reportage, which have led to several cases of chaos on the sports scene.

The Minister said these at the 26th annual SWAG awards night held last weekend to honour devoted and talented sportsmen and women in Ghana. In all, seventeen persons were awarded for their outstanding performance last year. Three others were also awarded for their contribution towards sports.

The award winners were:Emmnauel Osei Kuffour, footballer of the year, Aziz Zakari athlete of the year, Elizabeth Baidoo female footballer of the year, Vida Anim female athlete of the year, Ishmael Addo goal king of the year, and Harry Zakkour, Chairman of the year.

Others are Jones Attuquayefio Coach of the year, Alex Quartey referee of the year, Samuel Ellis, juvenile footballer of the year; the top scoring club and club of the year went to the Accra Hearts of Oak and Ofosu Amoah prospect of the year.

The rest are Joseph Agbeko promising star of the year, James Armah professional boxer of the year, Gunther Darkey tennis player of the year, Frank Ofori for dedication and valour and Ben Tarley hockey player of the year.

The three special award winners are Edward Agyemah-Duah for featuring in three CAF champions league, Ambition Boxing Promotion for promoting boxing and Mr. Douglas Djarbeng for administering the Division one league.

The Minister expressed displeasure about some members of SWAG who continue to raise tension by generating debates on sensitive issues.

He called on SWAG to ensure that its members are conversant with sporting trends before going public.

Mr. Ebo Quansah, Acting President of SWAG, announced plans by the association to give a facelift to the SWAG park at Kotobabi in Accra through soliciting funds.

He also called for a probe into the US $1.8 million earmarked for the National Olympic Complex by the former Minister of Youth and Sports.
