Minister Beckons Individuals & Firms Into Women Soccer

Mr Edward Osei-Kwaku, Minister of Youth and Sports, on Tuesday said individuals and companies are being encouraged to partner the Ministry to promote women soccer by sponsoring some aspects of the game.

He said such collaboration would make women soccer competitive enough to whip up public interest and unearth talents for the country.

The Minister was answering a parliamentary question on how the Ministry is promoting women soccer.

Mr Kwakye Addo, NDC-Afram Plains South, had posed the question.

Mr Osei-Kwaku said the National Sports Council had requested Regional and District Development Officers to encourage honorary coaches to introduce and promote soccer among girls in their various areas.

"District Assemblies and Regional Co-ordinating Councils are being

encouraged to promote soccer among young women through the formation and sponsorship of women's teams in their respective areas."

He said the Ghana Football Association is collaborating the United States of America and China to train some of the players in the Black Queens.

"In this regard, three of the players of the National Women's Team are currently undergoing a training programme in China while 2 others are going through a similar programme in the USA. They will be away for 3 months."

The Minister said, a women's desk has been created at the secretariat of the Ghana Football Association to deal solely with issues concerning the development of women soccer in the country.
