Michael Helegbe Hopeful

Black Meteors skipper Michael Helegbe is delighted over his relationship with his French division one club Guigamp and think he has no regret moving to France.

“The understanding between my team mates and me as well as my managers is excellent and I must admit I’m doing extremely well there”.

“That alone is giving me enough motivation and strength to stay till my three year contract expires”.

Speaking to Africa Sports in an interview, the Black Meteors striker revealed that the stress-free atmosphere at Guigamp has greatly influenced and improved his game.

“There are a lot of good black players in Guigamp and I think it has improved my life. Their presence makes me feel so much at home.”

Having signed a three a three year contract of which he has served two years, Helegbe believes he still has a lot to offer his club and thinks this season will be the launch pad for his burning desire to get to the very top.

Despite his inability to score as many goals as he would have wished after playing eleven matches in the French second division this season, Helegbe remains hopeful.

“I still have some unfinished business at Guigamp and I hope to accomplish it before the end of my contract. All I need to do is to remain focused and with hard work, I know I can achieve it.”

He says playing in the French top division is now his prime target and has no doubt of achieving that dream with Guigamp.

“I came to Guigamp with the notion of breaking into the first team and thank God I have been able to achieve that. Now my ultimate goal is to contribute my quota to ensure that we qualify to play in Ligue 1”.

Helegbe, who is also the captain of the Black Meteors, says there is no way Nigeria’s Green Eaglets can stand in the way of the team qualification to the Olympics in Beijing next year but cautions the Nigerians must not be taken for granted.

“We know the Nigerians wouldn’t come here to joke considering the position they find themselves. My colleagues and I are much aware of the task ahead though and won’t allow them any breathing space. That game is our life and there is no way we are going to falter. We are not in to disappoint Ghanaians. Surely we shall qualify”. He confidently declared.

Though Helegbe believes the home crowd will be behind them, he says they won’t crumple under any weight of expectation and will concentrate fully on the game.

The captain revealed that his relationship with his colleagues is very special and singles out striker Asamoah Gyan who has been his playing mate since their childhood playing days as a very special friend.

“We have been best of friends since we met at Liberty professionals at colt’s level. He has been like a brother to me and we share lot of ideas. I passed through the ranks at Liberty with him as a very close pal and nothing has changed till date”.

He noted that with this current crop of Meters players Ghana will football will excel especially when God willing we play at the next Olympics.
