McCarthy handed late call up to Black Stars

Accra, May 27, GNA - Accra Hearts of Oak's number one goalie, Philemon McCarthy has been handed a late call up into the camp of the senior national team, the Black Stars after an earlier omission from the 32-man squad named by the technical team.

McCarthy, the nations number one goalie at the recent Championship for African Nations (CHAN) held in Cote D'Ivoire is expected to join the Stars on Thursday, after featuring for Hearts in a mid week Premier League game against Ashgold at the Len Clay Stadium, Obuasi.

Information gathered by GNA Sports reveals that the goalie's inclusion by the Milovan Rajevic led technical team of the Black Stars was to add further strength to the goalkeeping department. The keeper's inclusion was also based on the fact that he remains the safest pair of hands on the local scene and therefore deserves a place in the 32 man squad.

The call up, according to the information was also to serve as a psychological boost for the goalie, after the recent poor outings in the premiership which angered followers of his Club. McCarthy, it would be recalled was dropped from the 32 man squad named by the coach of the Black Stars ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Sudan next month.

The Stars will be the guests of the Malians on June 7 in Bamako, before taking on the Sudanese on June 20, in Sudan.
