Man U wins Coca-Cola-U 17 tourney

Accra, Feb. 16, GNA - Madina-based Manchester United won the Greater Accra edition of the Coca Cola Under-17 soccer tournament played at the Tema Sports Stadium last week.

Man United won the competition when they beat Labadi-based Schalke FC 4-2 on penalties after a goalless drawn game in regulation time, in which the latter dominated proceedings in both halves of the game but failed to find the net.

Man United and Schalke FC have thus joined the winners of Volta, Eastern for the national championship slated for the national capital Accra in April.

The Madina side took home a giant trophy, a 400 Ghana cedis cash prize, a set of jerseys and Coca-Cola products, while Schalke FC also received cash prize, a set of jerseys, a plaque and Coca-Cola products. Schalke's nimble-footed player Kadiri Ahmed received a trophy, a Coca-Cola branded bag and products, a certificate while the Golden Boots Award went to Man United's Akwasi Clifford. Man. United's A. Abass, goalkeeper Ben Ofori and coach Eric Katey also won the Discovery of the Tourney, Best Goalkeeper and Best Coach of the Tourney awards respectively.

Special Awards were presented to the acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council, (NSC) Mr Worlanyo Agra, the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku II, Tema Referees Association and the Municipal Chief Executive of Tema, Mr Kempes Ofosu Ware.

Coaches E. K. Afranie, Frimpong Manso and Tony Baffoe commended the organizers, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Limited for the exercise but cautioned the remaining Regions to avoid the use of over-aged players. The competition would next hit the Central Region from February 25 to 28 at the Cape Coast Stadium after which it will move to the Western, Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Regions before the final event in Accra.

Red Bull Academy players for trials in Austria

Accra, Feb 16, GNA - Two Players of Red Bull Soccer Academy are scheduled to embark on trials with their sister club SC Salzburg in Austria. The players, Felix Adjei and Joshua Otoo have been the most outstanding players of the Club in the national Division One League hence the invitation by their sister club for the trials.

Information gathered by GNA Sports reveals that the players are expected to leave Accra by the close of February for the trails which will see them featuring for the Austrian side if they excel.

Adjei is one of the Academy's best left wingers and a consistent goal scorer in the league, whilst Otoo remains the most reliable left wing back of the team in the second flight League of Ghana.
