Maidens through to final qualifier

Ghana are through to the next round of the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup (WWC) qualifiers, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed.

The first leg of the Ghana v Congo qualifying match was not played due to the inability of the Congolese team to make an appearance for the game scheduled for Sunday, August 18, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Following Congo's no-show, CAF has cancelled the return leg which should have been played on the weekend of August 30-September 1.

“We regret to inform you that following the fact that the first leg match Ghana v Congo in the frame of above-mentioned qualifiers was not played, the second leg match scheduled to be played on 30, 31 August, or September 1, 2013 is cancelled as well as the mission of the officials,” a statement signed by Heba Abdalla (CAF Senior Manager Women & Futsal Competitions) said.

“Consequently, Ghana is qualified to the next round of the qualifiers,” the statement further said.

Ghana are now through to the final round where six teams will play for the three qualifying slots available for next year's World Cup in Costa Rica.

The Black Maidens won bronze at the 2012 World Cup in Azerbaijan where they made their third successive appearance at the finals.
