Legon win opening match of University games

Cape Coast, January 22, GNA- University of Ghana on Thursday started the 18th Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) games on a bright note when they beat Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) 2-1 in the soccer competition at the Cape Coast sports stadium.

Vice President Aliu Mahama, is scheduled to formally open the games later in the day.

Although the KNUST boys lost, they were not disgraced as they matched their opponents boot for boot throughout the proceedings. Kicking under the instruction of class one referee, Joshua Mensah who stamped his authority on the game, Legon mounted an early attack but this action was quickly rebuffed by their opponents.

The game from then became balanced with the ball swinging from one end to the other until Legon's midfielder, Edmund Aseweh cracked home a 30- yarder shot which caught goalkeeper Ben Sadic Osei of KNUST napping in the post.

Legon, featuring Richard Opoku and Samuel Asante of Feyenoord FC fame, combined beautifully and dictated the pace until the end of the first half.

KNUST resumed the second half strongly and following a two-man move between outside right Kwabena Yeboah and inside left Safo Gyamfi they levelled up the scores through Gyamfi with a sizzling shot in the 52nd minute.

Legon in the 60th minute forced the tide in their favour by dictating the pace of the game and this paid for them when in the 74th minute, outside left, Bernard Obeng, who played a yeoman's game, scored the match winner.

In another match, University for Development Studies, beat University of Education, Winneba 2-1.
