Kotoko’s fate to be decided on Thursday

Asante Kotoko Asante Kotoko

Reigning Ghana Premier League Champions, Kumasi Asante Kotoko will on Thursday, August 27 find out if the Disciplinary Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) will dock them points for allegedly fielding an unqualified player in a league game.

The Porcupine Warriors have been dragged before the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee by both Hearts of Oak and league leaders AshantiGold for fielding Obed Owusu, an alleged unqualified player when Kotoko played the two clubs in Match Day 24 and 25 respectively.

Sportcrusader.com checks reveal AshantiGold are likely to drop their protest since they have all but secured the league crown, but Hearts of Oak are not letting go, especially because of their own precarious situation on the league log.

Kotoko beat Hearts 2-1 at the Accra Sports stadium when the two sworn rivals met in a league clash but according to Hearts, Kotoko’s Obed Owusu was ineligible to play that game because he had picked up three accumulated yellow cards and was due for suspension but Kotoko fielded him.

The Phobians thus lodged a complaint at the GFA, a copy of which was sent to Kotoko in order to allow them respond to the charges.

Kotoko have responded and clearly stated that they did nothing untoward.

The GFA’s Disciplinary Committee is now destined to make a ruling on the case on Thursday, August 27.

Hearts will be hoping for a favourable outcome of the case to aid their attempts to avoid relegation. The Phobians are currently occupying the 15th position on the league log with two games to end the season.

Kotoko will also hope to win the case because despite lying in 3rd place, the points build up in the league means a deduction of points could see the Porcupine Warriors in the relegation zone, and that could have dire consequences on the club.
