Kotoko fight ExCo over home ban

Kumasi Asante Kotoko have questioned the authority of the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the Ghana Football Association over their decision to temporarily ban them from using their home ground, the Baba Yara Stadium.

The FA's ExCo arrived at the decision on Wednesday after a meeting over the unruly behaviour of fans of Kotoko on May 8 when they hosted Medeama.

The league match ended 0-0 in Kumasi and after the final whistle some irate supporters of Kotoko launched violent attacks on the match officials whom they accused of bias officiating.

Centre referee Silas Okine and his two assistants Mumuni Issaka and Richard Kotey were whisked away by security personnel at the venue after various missiles were hurled at them.

Some of the furious supporters refused to leave the stadium as they waited to teach referee Okine and his men a 'lesson'.

The agitated fans threw stones and other missiles which smashed the windscreen of the Medeama bus and hit some of the players.

However, Asante Kotoko officials say the ExCo have no right under the statutes of the law to ban them from using the venue with just four matches to the end of the season.

The club's spokesperson Dr Ernest Opoku told Joy Sports: "There are a whole lot of lapses in the release that came from the FA.

"The decision should have come from the disciplinary committee or a special committee, unless of course the Executive Committee which is a statutory body of the FA is the special committee.

''And even in doing so, before you can suspend or ban a club, you will have to do a hearing first. The Executive Committee can close down the Baba Yara Stadium but they can't ban Kotoko that is what the law states.”

Asante Kotoko are hoping to defend the league title they won last season in a bid to record their 22nd overall.
