Kotoko Struggles for a Coach

Kumasi Asante Kotoko has commenced preseason training but without a coach to stir the technical direction of the club. The club is now under the tutelage of physical trainer, Awudu Nuhu.

The reason for this setback is that, the club?s Board of Directors kicked against the idea of employing a foreign coach as far back as last year and called on the management not to renew the contract of German Ralf Zumdick.

Now as the season approaches, the technical direction of the club is been thrown off-board because management is awaiting the Board's direction and inflow of cash to recruit and employ a substantive coach.

Network Herald sources indicate that management is awaiting the Board to approve the budget for the season taking into consideration the club?s participation in Africa and the domestic league.

Apart from this, money for the recruitment of some new players and the signing on of a coach has still not been released. A source close to the Board also questioned the financial standing of the club in respect to accrued gate proceeds from the African Cup Winners competition last year.

Though players' salaries are been paid, the source stated that, Herbert Mensah and his management team is also seeking the approval of influential life patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II before committing themselves fully even though they are still in charge.

With money been the key issue at stake, the uneasy relationship between the Board and Management appears to be stalling the club?s progress as it can be confirmed that some board members have made it clear that they do not want to work with the management members and vice versa.

Asante Kotoko now, lacks technical direction, as there is no clarity over new signings. In a whole, the club lacks direction because management is reluctant to invest in the club now and be reimbursed later whilst the Board has also failed to put forward its policies and raise money for the signing-on of a coach and possibly some new players.

For now Ralf Zumdick is not coming back based on the Board?s directive to management. But certain names have come up for consideration to take over from Zumdick. Black Stars assistant coach, Isaac Paha and Abdul Razak, a former player of the club are believed to be on the list of the club?s Board.

The continuous impasse is expected to head for Manhyia soon if not resolved at board and management levels, though Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has kicked against the idea of the club?s issues been settled at the Palace. For now, Manhyia might drop a bombshell if the tension continues, as a major reshuffle is likely.
