June set for All-African draw

Nigeria, hosts of the All-African Games, said the draw for the football event will be made in the capital Abuja on 5 June.

The games organisers said top officials of the Confederation of African Football (Caf)and Nigeria's vice-president Atiku Abubakar will attend the function.

"The draw will be for both the men and women's soccer events," Bolaji Ojo-Oba, an official of the organising committee, Coja, told BBC Sport.

"We're working round the clock to ensure a successful draw which will also be graced by footballers."

The men's football event is meant for players under the age of 23, while for the women, it is likely that senior teams will compete.

Women's soccer will be played at the Games for the first time and Caf has never had a female competition for under-23 players.

Hosts Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Algeria and Egypt are among eight teams that have qualified for the men's category.

The rest are Zambia, South Africa and defending champions Cameroon.

Cameroon defeated Zambia on penalties to win the gold at the 1999 Games in Johannesburg.

For the women's category, Congo Brazzaville, Ethiopia, Mali and Algeria have qualified.

Others are Ghana, South Africa, Cameroon and Nigeria's Super Falcons.

The Falcons are highly tipped to win the women's gold as reigning African champions.

They have been the dominant force on the continent since 1991.

Organisers of the games, scheduled for 4-18 October, said preliminaries for both soccer tournaments will be held outside Abuja.

Only the opening and final games will be played in the newly opened Abuja National Stadium.
