John Mensah joins Athletic FC United

Former Black Stars captain John Mensah has joined Swedish second tier side Athletic FC United on a year deal to revive ailing career, Ghanasoccernet.com can confirm.

Mensah, 33, officially joined the Swedish side on Friday evening.

The former Sunderland defender had his career almost truncated after last playing for FC Nitra in Slovakia.

John Mensah had a successful playing career with Rennes and Lyon in France before moving to England where he starred for Sunderland before sustaining a career threatening injury.

The strong defender dubbed 'The Rock of Gibraltar' was a member of the Black Stars squad that qualified Ghana to her maiden World Cup in Germany in 2006.

Mensah is highly tipped to push Superettan with his experience both at club and national level.
